Bone Grafting

Losing bone density in your jaw can feel like losing part of your confidence. It can affect how you eat, speak, and even smile. Bone grafting can restore more than just strength to your jaw; it can restore your hope for a healthy, complete smile.

Dental implants are a great way to replace one or more missing teeth; however, without enough healthy bone structure to support the implant, you may not be eligible for an implant procedure. By rebuilding the foundation beneath your gums, bone grafting paves the way for implant placement and gives you the comfort of knowing your oral health is back on track.

At Ladue Family Dental, our experienced team can assess your oral health and customize a treatment plan to help you restore your smile’s beauty and function.

How Can Bone Grafting Benefit Your Smile?

Bone grafting offers patients in Ladue, Frontenac, Clayton, and Town and Country numerous benefits, including the following:

Supports Dental Implants

A bone grafting procedure provides a stable foundation for dental implants. It fills the areas where your jawbone has deteriorated. This makes implant placement possible.

Preserves Facial Structure

Rebuilding your jawbone with a bone grafting procedure can help you maintain your facial structure and keep it from sagging. This can make you look younger.

Prevents Further Bone Loss

Replacing lost bone density with a bone grafting procedure can stimulate new bone growth and prevent further deterioration. This improves your overall oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bone grafting is often a necessary step before a dental implant procedure to ensure the success and longevity of your implant. At Ladue Family Dental, providing you with a strong, healthy foundation for your new smile is essential. Here’s why bone grafting may be recommended as part of your dental implant journey.

What Is Bone Grafting and Why Is It Necessary?

Bone grafting is a procedure that restores or increases bone volume in your jaw. It is commonly needed when the jawbone is too thin or weak to support a dental implant. Bone loss can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Tooth loss or extraction
  • Gum disease
  • Injury or trauma

When there isn’t enough bone to anchor an implant securely, placing the implant without grafting can lead to complications, such as implant failure. Bone grafting strengthens the jaw and provides a stable foundation, ensuring your implant integrates properly and can withstand everyday chewing and speaking functions.

How Does Bone Grafting Benefit My Dental Implant?

Bone grafting supports your dental implant and helps maintain your facial structure and oral health. Without sufficient bone, your jaw may deteriorate, leading to changes in facial appearance and difficulty with future dental work.

By investing in bone grafting now, you improve your chances of a successful dental implant and protect your smile for years to come.

The Bone Grafting Procedure Explained

When you visit our dental office for an implant consultation, we’ll use the latest 3-D imaging technology to assess your oral health. If you don’t have sufficient bone density to support a dental implant, we may recommend a bone grafting procedure first.

Here are the steps to the procedure:

  • Anesthesia — First, we’ll use a local anesthetic to numb your mouth completely. You won’t feel anything during the grafting procedure.
  • Incision — Next, we’ll make an incision in your gums to expose your jawbone, giving us the access we need to place the bone graft material.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting — Before placing the grafting material, we’ll remove any bacteria or debris that may be in the way.
  • Attaching the bone grafting material — Now, we’ll take the bone grafting material, which comes from your body or a donor, and attach it to your jawbone.
  • Covering the graft — A special membrane is placed on the grafting material to protect it.
  • Repositioning the gums — Then, we’ll carefully reposition your gums to their original position.
  • Stitching the gums — The final step involves stitching the area closed.
  • Healing — We’ll give you specific instructions on how to care for the area. Once it heals, we can begin your implant procedure.
