Why Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

Sometimes, particular dental issues make tooth extraction unavoidable. Here are some of the most common reasons we may need to remove one or more of your teeth:

  • Severe decay or infection — If you have a tooth that is severely decayed or infected and cannot be restored with a dental filling or crown, we may recommend extraction to keep the infection from spreading to your other teeth and surrounding tissues.
  • Advanced gum disease — If your gum disease goes untreated for a long time, it can result in tooth loss. This happens when the infection in your gums spreads to and damages the bone and soft tissues that hold your teeth in place.
  • Orthodontic treatment — If your teeth are overcrowded or severely misaligned, removing one or more teeth creates the space needed to achieve proper alignment. In these cases, we’ll recommend a dental extraction.
  • Wisdom teeth — If your wisdom teeth are impacted or crowding your other teeth, it can cause dental problems later on. We remove wisdom teeth for preventive purposes and when they are causing discomfort.

Are There Any Benefits to Removing a Tooth?

Although it may not seem like tooth extraction is ever a good idea, there can be numerous advantages to removing one or more teeth, including the following:

Eliminates Pain

Although you may experience some discomfort after a tooth extraction, removing your infected or impacted tooth eliminates the pain associated with the infection.

Removes Decay

We’ll always try to save your natural tooth, but if a root canal isn’t possible, a dental extraction removes the infection from your mouth and restores your oral health.

Protects Teeth

Instead of allowing an infection to spread from one tooth to the next, extraction keeps your surrounding teeth from being affected, helping you maintain a healthy mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Proper care after a tooth extraction is essential for a smooth recovery and to prevent complications like infection or dry socket. Following your dentist’s aftercare instructions will help ensure your extraction site heals quickly and comfortably.

Extraction Aftercare Tips

  • Bite down gently on gauze for about 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure to control bleeding.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours to prevent increased bleeding or swelling.
  • Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for the first 24 hours to protect the blood clot forming in the extraction site.
  • Eat soft foods like scrambled eggs, yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes for the first few days, gradually returning to your regular diet as you heal.
  • Keep the area clean by gently brushing your teeth, avoiding the extraction site, and beginning saltwater rinses (½ teaspoon of salt in warm water) after 24 hours.

What Should I Avoid?

  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products, as they can delay healing.
  • Avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages for at least 24 hours.
  • Don’t touch the extraction site with your tongue or fingers to prevent irritation.
